If you like to travel in two wheels and enjoy being outdoors, if you like country back tracks, gravel and roads, the mountain biking is for you. But before buying your own bike, you need to choose from the four categories of mountain bikes based on their suspension: Rigid, Hard tail, Soft tail and Dual (also called full suspension).
The rigid mountain bike has a frame with a rigid fork and fixed rear, with no suspension. It is important to note, however, that there are still a number of benefits associated with the use of fully rigid classic mountain bikes: Lower cost, improved feedback and fewer breakdowns and repairs. Hard tail bikes work with front suspension fork and no rear suspension, while Soft tail mountain bikes work with a frame with small amount of rear suspension, activated by flex of the frame instead of pivots. Dual mountain bikes or full suspension bikes use a front suspension fork and rear suspension with a rear shock and linkage that allow the rear wheel to move on pivots. This last one is the most common among the practitioners of mountain biking.

Mountain biking can be performed almost anywhere from a back yard to a gravel road, but the majority of mountain bikers ride off-road trails, whether country back roads, fire roads, or single track (narrow trails that wind through forests, mountains, deserts, or fields). There are aspects of mountain biking that are more similar to trail running than regular bicycling. Because riders are often far from civilization, there is a strong ethic of self-reliance in the sport. Riders learn to repair their broken bikes or flat tires to avoid being stranded miles from help. Many riders will carry a backpack, including a water bladder, containing all the essential tools and equipment for trailside repairs, and many riders also carry emergency supplies in the case of injury miles from outside help.
